15 Squarespace SEO Tips That Actually Move Rankings

Squarespace already handles the technical side of SEO for you. SSL, sitemaps, mobile rendering and canonical tags are automatic. The Squarespace SEO tips that actually move rankings are all about the work on top: page titles you wrote on purpose, one clean H1 per page, image alt text, structured data, and pages built around a single search intent. No plugin does that part, and none is needed.

Squarespace SEO tips 1 to 3: the foundations

1. Verify Search Console and submit your sitemap. Squarespace builds /sitemap.xml for you and Google just needs pointing at it. Search Console is also where you find out which searches you already show up for, which beats guessing.

2. Write SEO titles separately from page titles. Every page has an SEO tab where the search title can differ from the title on the page. Your page can say "Our Work" while the tag says "Squarespace Web Design Portfolio, Your Studio". Keep it near 60 characters and put the important words first.

3. Write meta descriptions worth clicking. Around 150 to 160 characters, one concrete promise, one reason you and not someone else. It is not a direct ranking factor, but it's your ad in the results and click-through rate matters.

Structure your pages properly

4. One H1 per page. The text editor makes it easy to use Heading 1 as a font size, so people end up with six of them and no page structure at all. H1 is what the page is about, H2s are the sections, H3s are the details. Pick the level for what it means, then style it with CSS.

5. One search intent per page. The most common problem I find in audits isn't missing keywords, it's four pages fighting over the same one. Give each service page a single query to own. If two pages compete, merge them or redirect one.

6. Keep slugs short. /squarespace-seo-tips beats /blog/2026/9/15/my-thoughts-on-seo-this-year. Set it before you publish, because changing it later means adding a redirect.

Images

7. Rename files before you upload them. custom-squarespace-bakery-website.jpg tells Google something. IMG_4872.jpg doesn't. Squarespace won't let you rename after upload, so it has to happen first.

8. Write alt text on every image that means something. Describe what's in the picture the way you would to someone on the phone. It helps people using screen readers first and image search second. Portfolio images are worth the effort, since they can rank where a competitor's stock photo can't.

9. Resize before uploading. Squarespace serves responsive sizes but it can't rescue a 12MB original. Export at 2500px or under for full-width images, compress, then upload. Page speed counts and images are almost always what's slowing you down.

Schema and internal links

10. Add structured data beyond the defaults. Squarespace outputs some basic schema, but LocalBusiness with your real name, address and phone, plus Service and FAQ markup, goes in through code injection. This is what feeds rich results and helps AI search engines describe you correctly. It's part of every build I do, or I can add it on its own through code support.

11. Link your own pages with real anchor text. "See my Squarespace pricing packages" does more than "click here". Any page you care about should be reachable from two or three others.

12. Show dates on your posts. Undated content looks stale to readers and to AI answer engines. Put the publish date on, add an updated date when you genuinely revise something, then go and revise things.

Local signals, and the part that never ends

13. Get the local basics right if you serve an area. Your city and service area in text people can read, the same business name, address and phone everywhere you're listed, and a Google Business Profile that matches. For a service business this outweighs most on-page tweaking.

14. Update old posts, don't only write new ones. A two-year-old post that still gets traffic is worth more than a new one. Fix the facts, tighten the opening so it answers the question in the first line, resubmit it. That first line matters twice now, because it's what AI Overviews quote.

15. Look at your numbers monthly. GA4 tells you what visitors do, Search Console tells you what Google shows. Anything ranking eighth to fifteenth is your cheapest win, so improve those before writing anything new.

Frequently asked questions

Is Squarespace bad for SEO?

No. That reputation is left over from about a decade ago. The technical basics are handled automatically and rankings then come down to your content, your structure and your links, the same as anywhere else.

Do I need an SEO plugin for Squarespace?

There are no SEO plugins for Squarespace and you don't need one. Titles, descriptions, slugs and sitemaps are all built in, and anything advanced like custom schema goes in as a code snippet.

How long until SEO changes show results?

Technical fixes can show in days or weeks. New content ranking for a competitive term takes months. Things compound once the structure is right, which is why fixing titles, intent and internal links comes before writing more posts.

Does this matter for AI search like ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

More than it used to. AI engines quote pages that answer the question directly, have clean headings, show dates and use schema, which is tips 4, 10, 12 and 14 on this list.
