Utah Website Builders: Who to Hire, What It Costs, and What to Ask

If you search for a website builder in Utah, you’ll find four kinds of companies: agencies, monthly website subscriptions, independent designers, and do-it-yourself platforms. Agencies usually start around $5,000 and can run past $20,000. Subscriptions start low, around $119 a month, but you’re renting the site. Independent designers usually charge $1,500 to $6,000, one time. DIY costs $19 to $99 a month plus your time. The right one depends on how much the website has to do for your business, and how much of the work you want off your plate.
I’m an independent Squarespace designer based in Farmington, so I’m one of the options on this list. I’ll keep it fair.
At a glance
| Typical cost | Best for | |
|---|---|---|
| Agency | About $5,000 to $20,000+ | Bigger companies that want strategy, content and marketing in one place |
| Monthly subscription | From about $119 a month | Businesses that want a low upfront cost and don’t mind renting |
| Independent designer | About $1,500 to $6,000, one time | Small businesses that want a custom site they own |
| DIY platform | $19 to $99 a month, plus your time | New businesses and simple sites |
Prices come from what Utah companies publish on their own sites and ads, checked in October 2026. Most agencies don’t publish prices at all, so treat these as a starting point.
Agencies
Utah has a lot of web design agencies, from small Salt Lake City studios to firms in Lehi and Provo with twenty or more people. You get a team: strategy, design, development, copywriting and often SEO and ads, coordinated by an account manager.
The few that publish pricing give you a sense of the range. One Salt Lake City agency quotes $5,000 to $10,000 for a website, another advertises custom sites “from $6K”, and one of the larger Utah firms states a $20,000 minimum. An agency makes sense when the website is part of a bigger marketing plan, or when several people at your company need to sign off.
Monthly website subscriptions
Some Utah companies sell the website as a subscription: a low monthly fee, often from around $119, that covers the design, hosting and updates. It’s easy on cash flow, and that’s the appeal.
The trade-off is ownership. Read the contract for three things: how long you’re committed, what happens to the site if you stop paying, and whether you can take your content and domain with you. If the answer to the last one is no, you’re renting, and leaving means starting over.
Independent designers
This is one person, or a very small studio, who designs and builds the site and hands it over. Prices usually land between $1,500 and $6,000, one time, and you own the site from day one. You work directly with the person doing the work, which tends to mean faster replies and fewer handoffs.
Many independent designers specialize in one platform. I work only on Squarespace, so clients can edit the site themselves after launch without calling me. The risk with any one-person business is availability, so ask how far out they’re booked and how fast they reply.
Building it yourself
Platforms like Squarespace and Wix let you build a site yourself for $19 to $99 a month. It’s the right call for a brand-new business or a simple site, as long as you have the time. The comparison of hiring a designer vs an agency vs DIY goes deeper on when it’s worth paying someone.
How to choose
- Look at live sites they built. Not mockups. Open them on your phone.
- Read their Google reviews. Look for reviews that name the business and describe the project, not just stars.
- Get the price in writing. A fixed quote with the page count and number of revision rounds.
- Ask who owns the site. You should own the domain, the content and the account.
- Ask what happens after launch. Training, support, and what changes cost later.
- Check how they work. Most Utah builders, me included, work over video calls and email, which works fine. Being in the same time zone is still handy when something breaks.
Red flags
- No live examples, only screenshots.
- A long contract on a subscription site, with no way to take the site with you.
- Claims you can’t check, like “#1 web designer in Utah”, with no reviews to back them up.
- No written quote before a deposit.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a website cost in Utah?
For a small business, expect about $1,500 to $6,000 from an independent designer and $5,000 to $20,000 or more from an agency. Subscriptions start around $119 a month, and building it yourself costs $19 to $99 a month plus your time.
Do I need a web designer who’s based in Utah?
Not necessarily. Most of the work happens over video calls and email either way. A Utah-based designer does share your time zone and knows the local market, which helps with local search.
Should I rent a website or buy one?
Buying costs more upfront but you own it. Renting costs less upfront, but over a few years the payments add up, and you may not be able to take the site with you if you leave.
How long does it take to build a website?
Most small business sites take 2 to 5 weeks with an independent designer. Agencies usually take longer because more people are involved.
