Moving From Wix to Squarespace: What Transfers and What Doesn’t

You can move a Wix site to Squarespace, but there’s no button that does it for you. Squarespace’s import tool handles WordPress and a few other platforms, not Wix, so the switch is a rebuild: the design gets recreated in Squarespace and your content moves across in pieces. Done carefully, with redirects for every old URL, you keep your Google rankings. Here’s what transfers, what doesn’t, and the order I do it in.

What transfers and what doesn’t

Some things move over almost as-is. Others have to be rebuilt.

  • Your domain: it comes with you. You can transfer it to Squarespace or leave it where it is and point it at the new site.
  • Text and images: they move, but by hand or by script. Wix has no export for pages, so copy is moved across and images are downloaded from the Wix media manager in their original size.
  • Products: Wix Stores can export products to a CSV, and Squarespace can import physical products from a CSV. The columns don’t match, so the file needs reshaping in between.
  • Blog posts: there’s no Wix blog export either. A handful of posts get copied over; a big blog is worth scripting.
  • Contacts: they export as a CSV and import into Squarespace’s contacts or email lists.
  • Bookings, member areas, Wix apps and custom Velo code: none of these transfer. They get rebuilt with Squarespace’s own tools, like Squarespace Scheduling and Member Sites, or with an outside service.
  • The design: it doesn’t transfer at all. That’s usually fine, because most people moving are doing it partly to get a better site.

Before you start: take an inventory

Before touching Squarespace, list every page on the Wix site and its URL. The fastest way is to open yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, which Wix generates automatically. If you have Google Search Console, export the pages that get impressions too. Those are the pages your rankings live on, so they need the most care.

Then note anything that runs on a Wix app, like bookings, forms with special logic, or memberships, and decide what replaces each one. Surprises here are what stretch a migration from two weeks to six.

Build the new site while the old one stays live

Your Wix site keeps running the whole time. The new site gets built on a Squarespace trial, which you can extend if the build runs long, and nobody sees it until it’s ready.

Rebuild the pages, move the content in, set up the store or scheduling, and check every page on a phone. Write titles and descriptions for each page as you go instead of leaving it for later.

Keep your rankings with redirects

This is the step that decides whether you keep your Google traffic. Wix and Squarespace use different URL patterns, so almost every address changes. A Wix blog post lives at /post/your-post, while on Squarespace it’s usually /blog/your-post. Wix product pages sit at /product-page/name; Squarespace puts them under your shop page.

Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its new home. In Squarespace that happens under URL Mappings, one line per page:

/post/your-post -> /blog/your-post 301

A 301 tells Google the page moved permanently, so the rankings move with it. Skip this and Google finds a pile of broken pages, and the traffic takes months to come back. The WordPress migration guide walks through redirect mapping in more detail, and it works the same way for Wix.

Switch the domain and launch

Once the new site is checked, connect your domain to Squarespace. If the domain is registered with Wix, you can transfer it to Squarespace or keep it at Wix and point the DNS records at Squarespace. Either works. A transfer can take a few days, so don’t start it the day before launch.

After launch, submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console, then check the coverage report over the next few weeks for any 404s you missed and add redirects for them. Cancel the Wix plan only after everything’s confirmed working.

How long the move takes

A small brochure site of five to ten pages usually takes one to two weeks. A store with a few hundred products, a large blog, or bookings and memberships takes longer, mostly because of the content moving and the testing, not the design.

If you’d rather not do it yourself, I handle Wix to Squarespace migrations at a fixed quote, redirects included. Still deciding between the two platforms? Squarespace vs Wix compares them honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my Google rankings when I move from Wix to Squarespace?

Not if every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new page. Expect some movement for a few weeks while Google catches up, then rankings settle. The sites that lose traffic are almost always the ones that skipped redirects.

Can I keep my domain name?

Yes. You can transfer the domain to Squarespace or keep it registered with Wix and point it at your new site. Your address doesn’t change either way.

Can I move my Wix store to Squarespace?

Yes. Products export from Wix as a CSV and import into Squarespace after the columns are reshaped. Order history and customer accounts don’t carry over, so export those for your records first.

Is there a tool that moves a Wix site to Squarespace automatically?

No. Squarespace’s import tool supports WordPress and a few other platforms, but not Wix. Some services promise to convert Wix sites, but the design and layout always need rebuilding.
