Squarespace vs Wix: Which One Should Your Business Use in 2026?

Squarespace or Wix? For most small businesses that want a site that looks professional and stays tidy without much effort, I’d pick Squarespace. Wix is the better choice if you want to drag every element exactly where you want it, need a specific Wix app, or want to start on a free plan. I’m a Squarespace partner, so take that into account, but I’ll tell you below where Wix wins.

Design and templates

The two editors work in opposite ways. Wix gives you a blank canvas: you can drop any element anywhere on the page, down to the pixel. Squarespace works in sections and grids, so things snap into place.

Wix’s freedom is great for the first hour and harder after that. It’s easy to end up with spacing that’s slightly different on every page, and the mobile version is something you often have to tidy up separately. Squarespace’s structure is the reason its sites tend to look consistent even when the owner isn’t a designer, and with custom code it can look like just about anything, which is what I do all day.

One thing to know before you start on Wix: you generally can’t swap the template on a site once it’s built. Changing direction later means building a new site and moving your content into it.

Ease of use

Wix is easier on day one. You see the page, you click on something and you change it. Squarespace has a small learning curve around sections and blocks, and then it gets out of your way.

The bigger difference shows up six months later, when you need to add a page or update a service. On Squarespace, a new page tends to match the rest of the site. On Wix, it matches whatever you do by hand.

Is Squarespace or Wix better for SEO?

Neither one ranks better on its own. Wix had a bad reputation for SEO about a decade ago, and that reputation has outlived the problems. Both now handle the basics: SSL, sitemaps, editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs and mobile-friendly pages.

What decides whether you show up on Google is the same on both: pages written around what your customers search, a sensible structure, speed, and other sites mentioning you. I wrote up what actually moves rankings in my Squarespace SEO tips.

Squarespace vs Wix cost

For a typical business site, the two cost about the same. Squarespace plans run about $19 to $99 a month on annual billing, and most of my clients sit on Core at $29. Wix plans run about $17 to $159 a month, with most small businesses on Light or Core. Both include a free domain for the first year on annual plans. Prices change, so check each platform’s pricing page before you buy.

Wix also has a free plan, but it shows Wix ads and uses a wixsite.com address, so it’s for testing, not for a business. The bigger cost on either platform is usually design and your own time. I broke down every line in the Squarespace cost guide, and my pricing is public.

Apps and features

Wix has a bigger app market, so if you need something unusual, there’s a better chance someone has built it. The trade-off is the same as with plugins anywhere: each app is another subscription and another thing that can slow the site down.

Squarespace builds more in: forms, blogging, online stores, appointment scheduling, member areas and email campaigns. Anything it doesn’t cover can usually be added with a code snippet or an embed instead of a monthly app.

Switching from Wix to Squarespace

There’s no import tool between the two, so moving means rebuilding. The pages get rebuilt in Squarespace, your text and images come across, and every old URL gets a redirect to its new page so Google and your old links still find you. Skipping the redirects is how businesses lose rankings when they switch.

It’s not a weekend job if you care about your search traffic. I handle Wix to Squarespace migrations at a fixed quote, or read what moving from Wix to Squarespace involves, step by step.

When Wix is the right call

Pick Wix if you want full drag-anywhere control, if there’s a Wix app your business depends on, or if you want to start on a free plan while you test an idea. Agencies that build lots of sites also like Wix Studio.

If your list looks more like: look professional, stay consistent as you add pages, get found on Google, and take bookings or sell a few products, Squarespace covers it with less tidying up along the way.

Frequently asked questions

Is Squarespace better than Wix for SEO?

Neither one ranks better on its own. Both handle the technical basics, and what decides rankings is your content, your structure and whether other sites mention you. The old idea that Wix is bad for SEO is out of date.

Can I move my Wix site to Squarespace?

Yes, but there’s no import button between them. Pages get rebuilt in Squarespace, content and images are moved over, and every old URL gets a redirect so you keep your rankings. I handle Wix migrations if you’d rather not do it yourself.

Which is cheaper, Wix or Squarespace?

They land in the same range for a business site, roughly $17 to $30 a month on annual billing. Wix has a free plan with ads and a wixsite.com address, which is fine for testing but not for a real business.

Which is easier for beginners?

Wix feels easier on day one because you can drag anything anywhere. Squarespace takes a little longer to learn, but it’s harder to end up with a messy layout, especially on phones.
